Homeopathy Treatment for Thyroid

What can Homeopathy do?

Thyroid treatment in homeopathy aims to set right the disturbance in the thyroid gland by stimulating the synthesis of thyroid hormone. In Homeopathy we do not aim to give artificially synthesized thyroid hormone as it is a temporary solution. Also by doing so our body won't get a chance to function properly to produce enough thyroid hormone as it gets it easily from outside.

For thyroid balance, Homeopathic treatment stimulates the thyroid gland and thus restores the capacity of the gland to produce a normal amount of thyroid hormone naturally as it was producing before.

The similimum ( most similar remedy)  is selected after proper case taking, analysis, totality of symptoms (symptom similarity - after taking into account the full range of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states of the person), individualisation and repertorisation.

Thus the medicine is prescribed accordingly and further investigations and changes in symptoms are noted from time to time. Gradually the dose of medicine is decreased based on improvement. Hence you do not need to take these medicines lifelong.

Alternatively, Levothyroxine is used by allopathic practitioners to treat hypothyroidism, Levothyroxine is also known as L-thyroxine which is a manufactured form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). It is used to treat thyroid hormone deficiency, but it has to be taken lifelong by the patient since it is artificially synthesized hormone.

Besides promoting synthesis of thyroid hormone, the Homeopathy treatment for thyroid also takes care of symptoms like abnormal weight gain, tiredness, baldness, cold intolerance, bradycardia, swelling, menstrual changes, anxiety etc.

What is Thyroid?

Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped endocrine gland situated at neck. It secrets thyroid hormones namely T3, T 4 which regulates metabolism of body.

If there is imbalance in secretions of these hormones it may lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which there is deficiency of thyroid hormone i.e. thyroxine.
Thyroid hormones help control your growth, repair and metabolism -a process where your body converts what you eat into energy. Your metabolism affects your temperature and how fast you burn calories.

Hypothyroidism is endocrine disorder resulting from insufficient synthesis of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism from birth is cretinism. Myxoedema is severe hypothyroidism in which there is accumulation of hydrophilic mucopolysaccharides in skin and other tissues.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

If you are suffering from symptoms such as :

Feeling tired all the time.
Skin and hair feel dry and rough.
Gained weight gradually.

It may be signal that you might be suffering from Hypothyroidism.

- Fatigue

The fatigue occurs regardless of how much sleep a person gets or how many daytime naps they take.

- Dry, coarse skin

People with hypothyroidism may also develop dry, brittle, and coarse hair or dull, thin nails that break easily.

- Feeling cold, Cool extremities

Hypothyroidism can slow down metabolism, which can lead to a drop in core body temperature.

- Mood and memory changes

Poor memory and concentration

It is common for individuals with untreated hypothyroidism to experience:

• anxiety

• depression
• apathy, or general lack of interest or feelings of indifference
• impaired memory function
• less attentiveness and concentration
• low moods
• slower thinking and speech

- Constipation

Digestion is another body function that can slow down due to hypothyroidism.

- Dyspepsia

- Hair loss

Untreated hormone disorders, including thyroid problems, can contribute to hair loss. This is because thyroid hormones are essential for the growth and health of hair follicles.

- Weight gain with poor appetite

Thyroid hormones help to regulate body weight, food intake, and the metabolism of fat and sugar. People with low levels of thyroid hormones can experience weight gain and an increase in body mass index (BMI).

- Slow pulse rate  & Shortness of breath

People with hypothyroidism may also have a slower heart rate, or bradycardia. Low thyroid levels can affect the heart in other ways too.

These effects may include:

• Changes in blood pressure
• Variations in heart rhythm
• Less elastic arteries

(Bradycardia can cause weakness, dizziness, and breathing problems)

- Swelling of the limbs

- Delayed relaxation of tendon reflexes

Hypothyroidism can affect a person's muscles and joints in numerous ways, causing:

• Aches
• Pains
• Stiffness
• Swelling of the joints
• Tenderness
• Weakness

- Menstrual changes:

Females with an underactive thyroid may experience heavy or irregular menstrual periods or spotting between periods.
Due to this it may lead to difficulty in conceiving.

- High Cholesterol

Thyroid hormones play a vital role in removing excess cholesterol from the body via the liver. Low hormone levels mean that the liver struggles to carry out this function and blood cholesterol levels can increase.

What can CAUSE Hypothyroidism to occur?

Occasionally, the thyroid gland doesn’t release thyroid hormones, even when there is plenty of TSH. This is called primary hypothyroidism and is the most common type of hypothyroidism.

Approximately 90% of primary hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland.

Other causes of primary hypothyroidism are an iodine deficiency, a genetic disorder, taking certain medications and surgery that removes part of the thyroid.

Also during pregnancy, the body undergoes stress and needs to produce more thyroid for the growth of the baby, and this is why many women develop this condition during pregnancy or shortly after delivery.

Other times the thyroid gland does not receive enough TSH, the signal to release more thyroid hormone. This happens when the pituitary gland is not working properly and is called secondary hypothyroidism.

Diagnosis for Hypothyroidism

It depends upon the physical and mental symptoms alongwith the test reports.

Blood tests :

1. Increased value of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) indicate low levels of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism).

2. Low free T4 value indicates hypothyroidism.

3. In patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune disorder), there is increased values of anti-thryoglobulin (TgAb) and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb).

Ultrasound: Ultrasonography can help determine the nature of thyroid nodule(s).

A medical biopsy : Tissue sample is sent for examination under the microscope to distinguish cancer from noncancerous conditions. This is obtained from fine needle aspiration (FNA) or by surgery.

Diet and Advice

Having a slow metabolism comes with several health risks. It may leave you tired, increase your blood cholesterol levels and make it harder for you to lose weight.

- Moderate- to high-intensity aerobic exercise may help boost your thyroid hormone levels. In turn, this may help speed up your metabolism.

- People with hypothyroidism might also benefit from increasing their protein intake.

- If you do have an iodine deficiency, add iodized table salt to your meals or eat more iodine-rich foods like seaweed, fish, dairy and eggs.

- Selenium helps the body “activate” thyroid hormones so they can be used by the body.

This includes Brazil nuts, tuna, eggs, and legumes.

Zinc rich foods :

You should aim to eat more zinc-rich foods like oysters and other shellfish and chicken, etc.

What to Avoid ?

Food which contain goitrogens should be avoided

Surprisingly, many everyday foods contain goitrogens, such as :

- Soy foods: Tofu, soyabean etc.
- Certain vegetables: Cabbage, broccoli,  cauliflower, spinach, etc.
- Fruits and starchy plants: Sweet potatoes, peaches, strawberries, etc.
- Nuts and seeds: Millet, pine nuts, peanuts, etc.
