Hives, also known as urticaria, is a kind of skin rash with red, raised, itchy bumps. They may also burn or sting. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, lips, and ears. Hives vary in size , and may join together to form larger areas known as plaques. They can last for hours, or even days before fading. They can be acute or chronic ( lasting more than 6 weeks) ; with acute almost always being an allergic reaction.
Risk factors include having conditions such as hay fever or asthma.
Urticaria occurs when a trigger causes high levels of histamine and other chemical messengers to be released in the skin. These substances cause the blood vessels in the affected area of skin to open up (often resulting in redness or pinkness) and become leaky. This extra fluid in the tissues causes swelling and itchiness.
Histamine is released for a wide range of reasons, including: - An allergic reaction to substances such as latex
- Cold or heat exposure
- Pain medications
- Insects or parasites
- Heat or cold
- Alcohol, food or food additives
- Pressure on the skin
- Effect of certain chemicals found in some types of food and medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Diagnosis is typically based on the appearance. Patch testing may be useful to determine the allergy.
